MERT WORKSHOP FORTIFIES MALAYSIA'S MEDICAL EMERGENCY RESPONSE

A significant Basic Medical Emergency Response Training (BMERT) workshop, held from June 12th to 14th, 2025, has concluded with the announcement of key initiatives aimed at substantially enhancing Malaysia's medical emergency response capabilities. The workshop's outcomes are set to strengthen national preparedness for disasters and large-scale medical emergencies.

The initiatives, designed to equip medical personnel with the latest knowledge and skills, underscore a commitment to bolstering the nation's resilience in the face of evolving threats. This aligns with broader Malaysian government efforts in disaster risk reduction, which involve agencies such as the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) and the Ministry of Health.

Three core initiatives were announced as direct outcomes of the workshop:

* Comprehensive BMERT Module Update: The foundational BMERT module, a cornerstone of medical emergency training in Malaysia, will undergo a thorough update. This modernization will incorporate the latest advancements and best practices in disaster management, ensuring that all response teams are proficient in current, cutting-edge medical and operational protocols.

* New BMERT Refresher Course: To ensure the sustained readiness of certified personnel, a new BMERT Refresher Course is being introduced. This program will provide existing BMERT holders with crucial updates on recent developments in disaster medicine and response strategies, maintaining a high level of competency across the board.

* Launch of Core-MERT (C-MERT): Recognizing the need for a broader base of foundational knowledge, a new one-day introductory course, Core-MERT (C-MERT), will be launched. This program is designed to extend essential disaster preparedness and response knowledge to a wider audience of medical and healthcare personnel, thereby enhancing the overall resilience of the nation's healthcare system.

These programs are pivotal in creating a more robust and effective emergency response framework for Malaysia. By focusing on both the continuous development of specialist teams and the widespread dissemination of fundamental emergency principles, these initiatives collectively aim to improve survival rates and mitigate the impact of future emergencies. The emphasis on standardized training and regular updates reflects a proactive approach to national safety and security.
